Club Tour to Jersey

During the half-term break a group of four seniors and four juniors from Rugby Table Tennis Club went on a trip, organised by club chairman Dick Frost, to Jersey to compete against table tennis players on the island.

The juniors were matched very evenly with the Jersey youngsters and ended up with a 16-16 draw in their matches overall. Daniel Fellows' defensive style proved successful with him winning 7 of his 8 matches, Matthew Outhwaite 5 and Ben Meakin 4. Stephen Maddison had so many 5 set matches that could easily have gone his way, but it was just not his week for luck on the tables.

The senior team of Dick Frost, Adrian Pilgrim, Rachel Pilgrim and Jo Outhwaite were faced with the Jersey World Cup team, which proved to be rather daunting. Nevertheless, Rachel won 3 out of her 4 singles and Adrian showed everyone what a skilful player he is, winning all his 4 singles in fine style. Jersey's squad proved too strong in the senior doubles, though there were some very enjoyable games in mens', ladies', and mixed doubles. Overall the seniors' result was 13-7 in Jersey's favour.

In addition to table tennis, the group managed to find time for a number of other activities including ten pin bowling, swimming, visiting the underground museum 'Jersey Tunnels', Jersey Pottery, Jersey Zoo, various sightseeing drives and possibly the windiest walk they could have had without being blown over!

The players were well looked after with superb accommodation at Hotel la Tour in St Aubin, and use of the Georgetown Community Bus made it possible to see more of the island than anyone could have dared hope in such a short time. After this successful trip it is hoped that Jersey players will visit Rugby next year for a return fixture.

Thanks to Jo Outhwaite for the report.
